I dream of GG

I'm sure there's a story behind this one, but I don't know what it is just yet.  Here's something kind of neat that I found at the Baltimore Show. It appears to be from around the first decade of the last century, judging from the style of the tip . . .

NOTE:  This article is now included in the print version of The Leadhead's Pencil Blog, available anywhere you buy books, or also from The Legendary Lead Company.

I am almost sure the gg is for Greta Garbo. 80% of her belongings were engraved or personalized with her initials. There is an estate property auction coming up in Dec. 14-15 2012, with other pens that are also initialed. Here is a link to the video I made on youtube, you can also see the description for links to the Juliens auction, there are similar lower-case monograms here.

Hello again, I thumbed through the auction catalog and I see where you're coming from. It's an interesting lead, but I don't think this is our GG. First, the items in the auction are all imprinted "GG" on the barrel, as was usual, and not on the clip. Also, the clip does not appear to be engraved but looks to have been made with that logo on it.

Finally, I see that Ms. Garbo was born in 1905 - she wouldn't have been a teenager yet by the time the pencil was made. (Of course on this last point, the clip could easily have been slipped off something else and put on this pencil).

Thanks for writing!
