King Kong

This one was a bit of a surprise. I bought it in an online auction because I liked the pattern:

The other feature that attracted me to it was the hallmark - an F in a shield – denoting Leroy W. Fairchild:

The intricate top didn’t hurt, either:

But when this one arrived, and I opened it up, there was another surprise waiting for me:

Of course, without any sense of scale, you can’t tell any more from this picture than I was seeing online. Here’s some help: the Fairchild posed next to the gargantuan magic pencil I once called the "Mother of All Pearls" (http://leadheadpencils.blogspot.com/2012/01/mother-of-pearl-or-mother-of-all-pearls.html):

That’s right. This one is half a foot long!
